So many people I meet are frustrated artists; they always want to be pursuing some creative avenue but have a ready made excuse as to why they are not. For these people, I often encourage photography because of its easy accessibility. Once you score a photo you like, you can send it into companies like My Pop Art, who can turn it into Pop Art genius.
So where do you begin when your creative skills feel rusty? The answer is simple. You begin anywhere. My one friend was having a bit of a creative block and was discussing it with me as she reclined on her couch. I walked over, handed her my camera and told her to start shooting. What, she asked? What was there to shoot? Her dog lie on flood, sound asleep (not worrying much about honing his creative skills apparently.) I pointed to him and, while she was still in horizontal mode, began grabbing shots.
Soon, she got up and took a few more. Then she opened up a curtain so natural light would fall on old Rover. Soon she was happily snapping away. The next day, she shot some photos of her daughters in play. Her “rustiness” had unrusted itself pretty darn easily!
If you want to explore an aspect of creativity but aren’t sure where to begin, pick up your camera. Most of us have some kind of camera lying around. Just shoot! It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t even have to be good. The idea is to get the creative juices going by doing something…anything!
Creativity is a muscle that can apathy quickly. But the good part? It doesn’t take much to strengthen it back up. It just takes a little action and zero judgment.
