Any 8-year old Can Do That!

It’s often common to overhear the following at a modern art museum:

“My kid could have done that.”

“Why is that guy (or gal) getting paid for that work!?”

Modern art – which includes Pop Art – can often deal in abstractions that frustrate the viewer. My Pop Art offers art based on your artwork (a well-constructed photograph, for instance), making it easy to understand.

But what happens when you encounter a piece that confuses you? Splatters on canvas or a single white dot on a black background? Do you dismiss it as too obtuse for your tastes? Maybe its time to expand your horizons and dig a little deeper.

One expert has this to say:

Knowing that an artist may be deliberately evoking an emotional response, it pays to take a moment and question our immediate reactions. If a work makes you angry, ask yourself why. What is it about the work that upsets you? What purpose might the artist have in upsetting you? Likewise, if your feelings are positive, why are they positive? What about the painting makes you happy? And so on — take the time to examine your own emotions in the presence of the painting.

When you look at a piece of art, remember that the artist is trying to send you a message. What is that message? How does it affect you?

P.S. Most likely, you’re 8-year could not have done that!
