Back in the early days of photography, pictures and photos were black and white. The only time they did not come in black and white is if they were hand tinted with certain sepia tones. Using sepia tones began around the 1880’s. Sepia was made by adding a pigment that was made from the Sepia cuttlefish to the positive printing of pictures. This process then converted any remaining metallic silver into a sulphide. This was more resistant to any wear and tear over time.
